Today’s preachers have much to be gained by sitting at the feet of those who have gone before us. In his new book Sacred Rhetoric: Preaching as a Theological and Pastoral Practice of the Church(Wm. B. Eerdmans), Michael Pasquarello III offers us an opportunity to learn from voices like Augustine, Saint Benedict, Thomas Aquinas, Hugh Latimer, Martin Luther, John Calvin and others. He notes that the book is “an essay in homiletic theology, a description of the enactment of Christian witness, the performance of God’s Word through the ministry of preaching.” Pasquarello is Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary.
