In a Joe McKeever cartoon, the pastor sits behind his desk. (We know it’s make-believe because the desk is clear of everything except his blotter and the nameplate with “Pastor” on it.) In front of the desk sits a layman in the church identified as “town councilmember Allgood [who] believes in long-range planning.” Allgood is saying to the pastor: “In case I decide to run for president some day, I want you to promise not to do anything or say anything stupid for the next 20 years.” (Baptist Message [La.], June 12, 2008.)
