?According to the newspaper, it actually happened in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Police say a driving instructor was drunk while giving a driving lesson. Sounds like he forgot one of the most important lessons. The man will escape jail time but will lose his license for a year. He was reported by a convenience store clerk who smelled alcohol on him and saw him step into the driving school car for the lesson. Incidents like this remind us of how important it is to practice what we preach.

This story begins in 1989 in Harlingen, Texas. Dan Henderson was on the city desk when a man dropped by the office and said that he was from Cleveland, Ohio. His name was Don Richards. He was visiting the Valley. He was crusading there and everywhere, he said, “to encourage more motorists to use their seat belts.” He said that his wife had been killed in a comparatively minor car accident because she did not have her lap strap buckled. Mr. Richards said, “You newspaper people should do more to encourage the proper use of seat belts!”

That was a year ago.

Now, The Valley Morning Star has received word from Cleveland that Crusader Donald Richards was himself involved in a head-on car crash on a rural road. His head went through the wind shield and he is dead. State police say that he was not wearing his seat belt.

Sometimes what’s on the outside doesn’t always coincide with what is on the inside. During Mikhail Gorbachev’s historic pre-Christmas meeting with Pope John Paul II, people were amazed to hear Gorbachev speak of religious freedom and the right of people in the Soviet Union to satisfy their spiritual needs. The words which flowed from the mouth of the Soviet Communist Party leader were beautiful as the painting hanging over the two men’s heads – the painting by Pietro Cannucci (Perugino), a famous painter of religious scenes – and also a renowned atheist.

cried, “I want to stay with you and mom.”

The Hollywood branch of the American Cancer Society decided to hold a benefit night in conjunction with a professional tennis tournament. It turned out to be embarrassing for them, however, when they learned that a major tobacco company was sponsoring the competition. Officials of the society found out too late that they had committed themselves to selling 500 tickets to an event that was named after a well-known brand of cigarettes. The publicity sent out by the Hollywood chapter portrayed a young woman with a tennis racket in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

That situation reminds me of Christians who, while trying to live for the Lord and speak in His behalf, frustrate their own purposes and bring reproach to Christ’s cause by making commitments to the wrong parties.

Diary of Deceit

On May 3, 1987,
the story of Gary Hart’s fling with blond model and actress Donna Rice finally
erupted into a national scandal.

As it unraveled,
the tale included accounts of her visit to his town house in Washington, a boat
trip to Bimini, off the coast of Florida, as well as assorted reports about
the promises he had allegedly made to her about their future together.

Gary Hart showed
no remorse.

On May 5, he admitted
he’d made a “big mistake” but insisted he had done “nothing immoral.”

On May 8, Hart
announced he was withdrawing from the Presidential race.

On May 25, Hart’s
picture with Donna Rice sitting on his lap appeared on the front page of a national
weekly – along with an account of their overnight boat trip to Bimini.

On Sept. 22, Hart
told Ted Koppel on ABC-TV’s Nightline that he had not been “absolutely
faithful” throughout his marriage.

On Dec. 15, Gary
Hart announced he had decided to re-enter the Presidential race.

On Jan. 13, he
had received almost $1 million of taxpayers’ money for his campaign.

On Jan. 15, at
the Democratic Presidential candidates’ debate in Iowa, he maintained that “there
is a difference between public morality and private morality.”
