What do Americans think about God? That’s the focus of America’s Four Gods (Oxford Univ. Press), by Paul Froese and Christopher Bader and based on a major survey of Americans’ religious beliefs. The authors contend that differing cultural beliefs are rooted in differing views of God, of which they identify four: the Authoritative God, the Benevolent God, the Critical God and the Distant God. This is a helpful book for church leaders in understanding the basis of worldviews of people in and out of the pew.
