For those believers ready to move to a deeper level in their walk with Christ, Kevin DeYoung has written The Hole in Our Holiness: Filling the Gap Between Gospel Passion and the Pursuit of Godliness (Crossway). “The hole in our holiness,” DeYoung says, “is that we don’t really care much about it,” and the church doesn’t emphasize it. He writes: “It’s not that we don’t talk about sin or encourage decent behavior. Too many sermons are basically self-help seminars on becoming a better you. That’s moralism, and it’s not helpful. Any gospel which says only what you must do and never announces what Christ has done is no gospel at all.” The book is a healthy and helpful call to rediscover God’s call to His people to be holy.
