A survey by Pew Research’s Religion & Public Life Policy unit found that a little more than half of Americans still consider Christmas to be a primarily religious holiday, though about three-fourths still claim to believe in the story of Jesus’ birth as told in the Bible. More than a third of Americans consider Christmas to be primarily a cultural rather than religious event.
The poll shows the younger you are, the less likely you are to view Christmas as a religious event, and while three-fourths of those surveyed say they attended Christmas-related Christmas services when they were growing up, only about half continue to do so.
That doesn’t mean they’ve given up on Christians altogether. The poll indicates 96 percent of Americans still celebrate Christmas, and 86 percent will celebrate and exchange gifts with family and friends. However, sending Christmas cards and singing Christmas carols is on the decline. (Click here to read a full report.)
