The Cherokee Indians kept a fire burning on their sacred mound near Bryson City, North Carolina. People came from miles around to get the fire and take it home with them. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Easter service is at midnight. All the lights in the building are extinguished. Then a single candle appears at the altar. Congregants light their candles from it, and then carry the light home with them. They call it the Easter fire. All of us should carry something home with us from the Easter service. It is not a literal fire, but a spiritual fire. Carefully tended, we can keep it burning all year long.
