In December 2013, National Public Radio reported on a little-known fact about the Cold War. When the Cold War ended, a western specialist went to Russia looking for stockpiles of uranium. He found a warehouse, unlocked, with tons of uranium. The danger was obvious. He persuaded the Russians to sell the uranium and persuaded power companies in the United States to buy it. For years, homes in America had been lit and warmed by what originally was intended for atomic bombs. It added a modern touch to an old text: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and theirs pears into pruning hooks” (Isa. 2:4; Micah 4:3).
