Don Knotts was one of the most endearing comedy icons of his generation. He starred on stage and in TV shows and movies. He was best known for his portrayal of Barney Fife, the less than efficient deputy on “The Andy Griffith Show.” It often was noticed that Don Knotts took a character known for his blunders, arrogance and insecurity, and made him loveable. What was his secret? Perhaps it can be found in the inscription on his tombstone. It says of Knotts, “He saw poignancy in people’s pride and pain, and he turned it into something endearing and hilarious.” Those who aren’t actors can learn something from taking note of the pain and pride in the lives of all people.
