In 1963, the U.S. federal government came up with an idea that was known as “Project Greek Isles.” The highly classified project involved the creation of a secret underground fallout shelter hidden practically in plain sight in the ultra-posh Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This emergency shelter was to be used to house the members of the Senate and House of Representatives in the case of a nuclear attack.

One of the most ingenious aspects of the project was that some of the rooms and spaces were in plain view and used by the resort. The hidden metal doors never were used. There had to be a staff to make sure the facility always was ready. These stewards of the place operated under the guise of TV repairmen for the resort. They did do some repair work, but most of all they had to keep the facility stocked and all the processes ready. For some people, this was the only job they had. Fortunately the bunker never was used. In the 1990s, the news broke and the government decommissioned the bunker and visitors now can tour it.

Think of all those people who were faithful in simply being ready. We believe the return of Christ will happen. Jesus told us what He expected of stewards. He expected us to do our work and be ready. When He comes, will He find faith on earth?
