In Dingwall, Scotland, there is an old tradition that after a man had been sentenced to death he still could escape the punishment if he could get through the crowd and touch the steeple of the church before anyone touched him. However, the wages of sin is death, and the only way they can be avoided is by the grace of God. So, salvation is not from touching a steeple—or the cross on the steeple—but by appealing to the cross that was erected at Calvary where Christ dies for us.
