On Dec. 8, 1796, George Washington appeared before a joint session of Congress. It was his last. A congressman from Virginia bitterly assailed Congress for praising Washington, saying, “Nobody remembers his name!” Really? There is Washington, D.C., the Washington Monument, Washington State, Washington University, and too many more to mention them all. The critics fade away. The doers are remembered.
