Islamic spirituality has received relatively little media attention compared to politics and world events, but millions among Muslims and thousands in America practice Sufism. Many see the Sufi way as a hope for countering extremist Islam. Westerners particularly are attracted to its discipline, respect of all faiths, and universal love.

Similar to Christianity, Sufism emphasizes turning away from self and toward the Divine and others, but many Muslims consider Sufism heresy because the practices go beyond basic tenets and seek direct communion with God.
