In Bringing the Word to Life (Wm. B. Eerdmans), Richard F. Ward and David J. Trobisch discuss “engaging the New Testament through performing it” (which happens to be the subtitle of their book). They point out that “In antiquity, literature was almost always read out aloud to an audience. And the Christian Bible was no exception. Readers experienced the text by watching and listening to a performer doing the text.” They argue that we can learn much from the New Testament by again performing it within our congregations.
