Students of the history of preaching (and of American history) will enjoy Preaching Politics (Baylor University Press) by Jerome Dean Mahaffey. Subtitled The Religious Rhetoric of George Whitefield and the Founding of a New Nation, Mahaffey offers an interesting study of Whitefield’s preaching and argues that the famed evangelist helped shape an American “rhetoric of community” that laid a foundation for the American Revolution.
