On my recent trip to Tokyo, I took my Kindle plus one book: Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul (Viking) by John M. Barry. It is a fascinating story about this important character in the early development of American religion and democracy. It is less focused on Williams as theologian than as a political thinker who helped influence American notions of freedom. It’s a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in America church history, or anyone who just enjoys a good historical story.
