I have found the Interpretation Commentary Series to be of real value in study for preaching and teaching, and publisher Westminster John Knox is now launching a new, complementary Interpretation series on key biblical themes. The first volume in this series is The Sacraments in Biblical Perspective by Ronald P. Byars. Leaders of today’s churches, which have too often marginalized baptism and the Lord’s Supper to the periphery of worship, will do well to explore this excellent treatment of the biblical and theological foundations of these worship events, as well as their history. Readers who will reject Byars’ traditional Presbyterian views on infant baptism will still find the book to be of great value in its rich treatment of its subjects.
