According to The Wall Street Journal (10/14/03), “Excessive student drinking wreaks a huge toll across the U.S. The National Academy of Sciences estimated last month that underage drinking in the U.S. costs $53 billion a year in alcohol-related traffic accidents, violent crime and other harmful consequences.”

The famous general Stonewall Jackson avoided alcohol. Once when he was very ill
and the weather was bad, his doctor persuaded him to take some brandy. Jackson
was reluctant.

“Don’t you like it?” asked the doctor. “I like it very much,
“said Jackson.” That is why I don’t drink it.”
That may be the
best reason in the world to abstain from alcohol.
