In
25 of the 50 United States you can leave your estate to a person or to an institution
but not to an animal. However, in half of the states you can leave your wealth
in trust to a pet. You can also book a room in a no-kill shelter or a pet retirement
home. For example, Pet Estates in Albany, N.Y. offers lifetime care for your
pet when you pass on at an annual cost of $ 21,400!
In
view of the human hunger, misery and disease in the world, one wonders why anyone
would choose to pass up those opportunities to provide lifetime luxury to an
animal.

Early this year the Asheville, North Carolina Times carried the remarkable
story of couple who fly all over the country putting on special events for
dogs. They do dog weddings. They do dog bar mitzvahs. They do dog birthday
parties. They got started in this strange business by baking all natural dog
biscuits. That led to doggie cakes and pizzas. Now they are hired by the rich
to put on extravaganzas for dog’s special days. Though we may all agree that a
dog is man’s best friend, it is obvious that these events are not really for
the dogs but for their owners. One wonders about a society where people have so
much money they can cheerfully throw it away on such events while millions
starve.
