Can you imagine the shock when a Milwaukee real estate agent entered a house that had been foreclosed and discovered the body of the owner, David Carter? Experts estimate he may have been there for four years. People generally liked Carter, calling him smart, generous, funny. Carter had quit his job and told friends and coworkers he was moving away. However, he didn’t move away; it appears he took his own life. The question is: Why was a man so disconnected from community that people would not notice a four-year absence?

A third generation preacher, Mike Shannon is Professor of Preaching at Cincinnati Bible Seminary of Cincinnati Christian University. He has served as a preaching minister, church planter, and college professor. His most recent preaching ministry was at the historic First Christian Church of Johnson City, Tennessee. In his nearly two decades at Cincinnati Christian University, Mike has served as both professor and Dean of the Seminary.
