Two sons of a minister, Orville and Wilbur Wright, by trade were bicycle builders and repairmen. They did something extraordinary on Dec. 17, 1903. After years of experimentation, they achieved the first airplane flight. It only went 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds, but everyone knew the world had been changed. From that humble beginning, we moved from biplanes to planes with single wings. We moved from propellers to jet engines. We saw aircraft used for transportation and weaponry. We eventually moved to jets and rockets and put a man on the moon on July 16, 1969—all this in just 66 years.
