They used to put crosses in the mosaic floors of churches, but in 427, Emperor Theodosius II forbade it, saying the symbol was profaned when people walked on it. Perhaps the cross is not so much profaned by what we do with the likeness of it as it is by what we do with the Christ who died on it. If we honor and obey Him, we honor His cross. If we doubt or disobey Him, we dishonor His cross far more than any footstep.
