A Ripley’s column reports that for hundreds of years representatives of Clan McIntyre, in Scotland, have delivered payment on a debt it owes to Clan Campbell. They must pay during the summer, and the debt is paid by the delivery of one snowball. Who knows exactly what happened, but it seems clear that the idea was to require a payment that would be difficult—a snowball in summer.

All of us have amassed a debt we cannot pay. It is not difficult; it is impossible for us. That is why we celebrate the price paid for us on the cross.
