Artistic symbols have been created for each of the 12 apostles. Two have a missionary emphasis. The symbol for James, brother of John, is three sea shells picturing a tradition that he went to Spain. The other is a ship that symbolized the missionary efforts of Jude. Whatever the traditions and whatever the symbols, it is certain the 12 did as Jesus commanded. They went into the world in every direction of the compass: north, east, south and west. They took Jesus seriously when He said they would be His witnesses unto the uttermost parts of the earth.
