Demosthenes was a famous Greek statesman and orator during the 300s B.C. He was reputed to have used many creative techniques to develop his skills. One story says that because he had a speech impediment, he would stuff pebbles in his mouth and speak aloud to help develop his ability to articulate clearly. He also did something else strange to keep himself at work. He would shave half his head, reasoning that he looked so silly he did not want to be seen in public. Therefore, he would stay inside at work.
