William Satchell wrote a novel about early migrant workers going through the forests of New Zealand’s Northland province. They followed after the timber cutters looking for the gum from stumps and branches of the Kauri tree (a gum used for varnish and linoleum). They lived a rough and lonely life so the novel is entitled Land of the Lost. Of course, everyone lives in the land of the lost. Whether you live in a city or in a rural area, in a civilized place or in an undeveloped place you are living among people who are lost.

Chester Harding was painting Daniel Boone’s portrait in 1820, when Boone was nearly 86 years old. Harding asked Boone if he had ever been lost during his travels. Boone replied, “No, I can’t say as ever I was lost, but I was bewildered once for three days.”

Even Christians can be much like Daniel Boone. We can be saved and covered by God’s Grace, but we can also be “mightily bewildered” sometimes by circumstances and tribulation in our lives. We must look to the source of our salvation for direction. When we do, we can overcome the obstacles that hold us back in our relationship with the Creator.

Recently a 61-year-old
Massachusetts grandmother took some wrong turns and got into a pile of trouble.
It was her first day on her new job as a school bus driver. She got so lost
that she wound up in the state of Connecticut. Because she had already picked
up ten kids on her route, an all-points bulletin was issued for her on charges
of kidnapping. Since she had crossed a state line, the FBI was called in. After
finally locating and questioning this distraught lady, the police concluded
that she had just made some wrong turns and gotten lost.

Most people who
stray away from God are not angry with God or hostile toward the church. They
just get distracted, make a few wrong turns, and suddenly they are lost. God
is more eager to find us than we are to be found. At this moment God is whispering
the name of each person who has gone astray, hoping that he or she will come
home.
