Bonnie Angelo tells about a time after Jimmy Carter’s election as president that his mother Miss Lillian had a private audience with the pope. She asked him to pray for human rights and for rain in Africa. She went on to Gambia in Africa and then to Senegal and then Mali. It rained in Gambia. It rained in Senegal. It rained in Mali. She said, “I thought I better call the pope and ask him to lay off.”
