According to news sources, there is an 88-year-old woman in Colorado Springs who walks laps around her nursing home property every day. She has reached 10,000 miles. Why does she do it?

It is in memory of her husband who passed away. Martha Michel started walking after her husband’s death in 1998. Actually, in a way it began before that. She and her husband enjoyed taking walks, so she continues the tradition. She has walked the equivalent of crossing the United States three times. She has created a kind of living memorial.

We have a living memorial of what Jesus did for us. It is called the Lord’s Supper. In His memory, we do something. We take of the bread and drink of the cup. Maybe living memorials are the best of all.

In
World War I, in a British section of the Western Front, just a few
miles back from the front lines, was a hut named Talbot House. It was
a meeting place for men going up to the trenches and men coming back.
In the loft above they served Communion – truly an upper room and
literally a last supper for many men. Over the door were these words:
“Abandon rank all ye who enter here.”

Always,
those words are above the place where the table is spread. We are all
on the same level here. All of us are sinners – confessing our sins
and seeking forgiveness in the only place it can be found – at the
foot of the cross.
