Psalm 1:1-3 (ESV)

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

The Bible is God’s Word, and God’s Word has a lot to say about bearing fruit…

I don’t think we understand the emphasis, importance or reward that God views fruit…

Colossians 1:3-6 (ESV)

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing-as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,

Vs 4

. Does our faith ”make a sound”?

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

– Expound on the ”sound” that our church family is making in the community? The sound comes out of what we say AND Do

– Expound also on the LOVE (AGAPE) that makes a sound

Agape: Not a classical Greek word…but found in revealed religion…

Faith-shaped the word agape

Translated=charity or benevolence

An action that does not do what a person desires, but what a person needs…

The kind of love that meets a need, not a desire…

For God so (agape) the world that He gave it what it needed, not what it desired…

”Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee”!

Paul wrote the there was a sound of the kind of love for the saints that was heard…

Is the love that we have for each other, the kind of love that makes a sound?

What kind of a sound are we making in regards to each other, to the church family? Are we excited? Are we professing faith? Are we building up and not tearing down? Is the love that we show each other changing lives?

Colossians 1:3-6 (ESV)

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing-as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,

Back to bearing fruit….God has a lot to say about fruit…

God from the beginning created plants and trees that would yield seed, fruit…

God declared from the beginning…

Genesis 1:22 (ESV)
22 And God blessed them, saying, ”Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

Gen 17:6

Word to Abraham ”I will make you so fruitful you will become a nation”…

God has always commended men for being fruitful…

Gen 49:22 speaks of Joseph as a ”fruitful bough”

Fruit was so important to God that in Exodus the people were instructed and committed to bring the choice ”first” fruits into His house

Leviticus 26:3-9 (ESV)
3 ”If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them,
4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

5 Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely.

6 I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land.

7 You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.
8 Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
9 I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you.

The reward of walking in obedience to God’s direction is amazing! And included being fruitful!

The sign of confirmed covenant with God was fruitfulness!

Psalm 92:12-14 (ESV)
12 The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green,

Points:

– Refers to trees, healthy trees have roots

– Old age….No ”get out of bearing fruit because I’m old” card!

”done my time”….???

Psalm 105:24 (ESV)
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes.

Points:

The Lord made his people….the Kingdom in us is always compelling/causing a Godly pressure to be fruitful! It actually leads to discontentment if you don’t respond!

Expound….You can think all kinds of things are wrong…Wrong with your family, job, marriage…even the church….discontentment comes and can be like a shotgun! Wide pattern…Hits anything….

This can be caused by not bearing fruit that God desires to release!

Expound…”made them stronger than their adversary” only healthy trees produce much fruit…

Colossians 1:9-10 (ESV)
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
