Are we Good Friday or Easter Christians? Do we see a dying man or the lving Christ? Do we see a shameful cross or an empty tomb? This sermon reminds us that it is "Easter Christianity which is empowered to change the world and not the Good Friday variety."
It's wonderful when a person comes to Christ-he or she is no longer under the tyranny of sin and guilt or of lust and desire-no longer are under the bondage of a purposeless and meaningless existence. Christ not only gives meaning to life, but also restores harmony to our spiritual lives.
I don't know of anyone who's more magnetic or more attractive than an authentic Christian. The longer I live, the higher priority I place on authenticity. As an authentic believer, you live what you believe. You speak the truth. You love generously. You admit failure quickly.
Most of us are in a search for wisdom, for understanding. We want to know -- we have a hunger for knowledge. We read, we explore, because we want to know; and we admire those who have achieved a certain level of knowledge and wisdom; we celebrate those who are wise.
Sometimes we may think that what we do for the Lord doesn't really matter. It may not be appreciated by some people, and it may be misunderstood by others. It is possible to be weary in well-doing. On the other hand, it is just as possible to lost passion, fire, focus and timely expression in our devotion to Christ. There are lessons here today from the Word of God for those who may need the fire of their devotion rekindled as we view our lives in relation to Christ, His cross and His mission.
[1Timothy 4:7-8] For better or for worse, we are creatures of habit. I learned this early when I was a newspaper delivery boy. A customer would tell me he was going to be on vacation for a week and not need a paper. Nevertheless, out of sheer habit, I would fling a paper up on his porch each day and have to pay for that paper myself.
Is religion relevant? Many people apparently do not think so. They don't believe religion is necessary because they are convinced that all anyone really needs in life can be obtained through science and technology. For them, any attention given to spiritual matters is a waste of time.
